Chegere HC II Maternity Ward Launched as DHO’s Compound Gets Facelift

Apac District has advanced efforts to strengthen health service delivery following the official handover of sites for two key infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the district’s health sector.

The site for the construction of a new maternity ward at Chegere Health Centre II has been handed over to SB Engineering Ltd. The project, funded through Primary Health Care (PHC) funds, for the start will cost UGX 185 million and is expected to enhance maternal and child health services while positioning the facility for its anticipated upgrade to Health Centre III status.

Speaking during the handover, Dr. Odongo Daniel James, DHO, emphasized the importance of the project in addressing maternal healthcare needs in the area.

“This maternity ward will bring services closer to mothers and reduce the burden of traveling long distances for delivery. It is also a strategic step towards upgrading Chegere HC II to HC III,” Dr. Odongo noted.

Assistant Resident District Commissioner Okot Jonal emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services at lower-level health facilities, particularly in rural areas. He urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the project specifications, maintain high-quality standards, and complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.

“This maternity ward will go a long way in reducing the challenges our mothers face while seeking delivery services. Let the contractor ensure value for money and timely completion,” Okot stated.

The in-charge of Chegere HC II welcomed the development, noting that the facility has been operating without a proper maternity ward, forcing expectant mothers to travel long distances to access delivery services. The new structure is expected to significantly boost safe deliveries and maternal healthcare outcomes in the area.

In a related development, the contract for the pavement of the District Health Officer’s compound has been awarded to Hard Rock Group Engineering Ltd. The facelift project is valued at UGX 34 million and is intended to improve accessibility, drainage, and the overall working environment at the district health headquarters.

The pavement works are intended to improve accessibility, drainage, and the overall working environment at the health department headquarters. District officials observed that the upgrade will enhance sanitation and ease movement, especially during the rainy season when the compound becomes muddy and difficult to navigate.

Okot called upon both contractors to work closely with the district technical team to ensure proper supervision and accountability. He reiterated the importance of transparency and quality service delivery in the implementation of government-funded projects.

Once completed, the initiatives are expected to significantly enhance service delivery and contribute to improved health outcomes across Apac District.
